Social Action

"We should not be surprised if we find Catholic social teaching demanding. The Gospel is demanding... We know that, at times, in order to remain truly a community of Jesus' disciples, we will have to say "no" to certain aspects in our culture, to certain trends and ways of acting that are opposed to a life of faith, love, and justice."

Our parish Social Action Commission is one of the ways we as a parish respond to the human needs in our society. It includes not only charity, which is direct response to a need, but also justice, which is the remedy of social problems. Justice work can include changing structures, policies and institutions which cause social problems. Social action is an essential function of parish/community life and is the fruit of our belief in Jesus and his Gospel.

Some of the charity work the commission coordinates are:

The Commission meets the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m.

The Holy Cross Social Action Committee is sponsoring 3 projects to help those in need in our parish community.  Below you will find a listing of the projects  so that you can read about them and determine if you are able to provide your support.

“Milk” My Day:

This project provides funds for students who do not have funds available to purchase milk.  The “milk break” at school is available for grades kindergarten through 3 grade.  The amount needed to provide milk for a student for ½ the year $26.75 and $53.50  for the full year.

Food Baskets:

Holy Cross is going to be packing Holiday food baskets for needy families.  In order to make this project a success we need your help. Would your family please consider sending food items needed to pack the food baskets to the church before Sunday, Nov 14.  If your family would like to make a donation instead, please send the money along with your student to faith formation and give it to their teacher. You can also mark the envelope and place it in the Sunday collection. We can use those funds to complete the food baskets with a turkey, fresh bread, fruits and vegetables.  We would like to pack food for a family for at least 1 week in each basket.

Below are some suggestions of food items you may want to consider.

Warm Their Hearts:

This project provides “NEW” or “Gently Used” WINTERWEAR to students and children who would otherwise not have appropriate winter wear. Donations can be placed in the basket by the fireplace.  As you pull out last year’s items and discover that they no longer fit anyone in your home we would appreciate if you would consider donating them to our project. New items can also be purchased if you would like to participate in this project.  We need Coats, Hats, Scarves, Gloves, Snow pants and Boots!
